4 Tips For Helping Your Pets Through A Move

by Erin Mitchell

Moving can be a major production for you and your family. It can become an even bigger chore if you have pets that need to be transported. Here are some tips to help make the moving process better for you and your pets.

1. Have Your Pet Checked Out

In the week before you move, have your pet examined by a veterinarian. This is especially important if you are moving to another state. Some states have restrictions regarding bringing other pets in and require proof of vaccinations or a proof of Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. If your pet takes medications, ask the vet for a copy of the prescriptions just in case you need to have it refilled when you arrive at your new home. Visiting the vet also helps to ensure that your pet is up to traveling.

2. Choose the Right Shelter

Unless you are planning to allow your pet to roam freely in your vehicle during the move, you need to ensure you have the right shelter, or carrier, for it. A dog or cat can be placed in a roomy carrier. If you have fish to transport, you can place them in a Styrofoam ice chest. Ensure that the fish are not overcrowded. If you have different types of fish, make sure you do not place breeds that are not supposed to mix in the same containers.

3. Limit Your Pet's Confinement

While transporting your pet, try to limit the amount of time spent in confinement. The less time your pet is spent confined to a container, the better for its overall health. If you do end up stopping somewhere overnight during the move, ensure that your lodging does accept pets and that you have the supplies needed to get your pet through the night.

4. Pack Enough Food

You need to have enough food available for your pet to consume while traveling and once you reach your new home. In the event that you cannot locate your pet's food immediately in your new location, you can always rely on the food you took for the trip. You might have to take additional steps to ensure the quality of your pet's food. For instance, if you have a bird that eats fruits and vegetables, store them in a cooler to prevent them from spoiling.

If you are nervous about moving your pets alone, talk to a moving company like Walsh Moving & Storage. The movers can provide you with a solid referral to a pet transportation company that can safely move your pet to your new home.
