Self Storage Units: 2 Tips For Easy Retrieval Of Stored Items

by Erin Mitchell

Packing your items into a self storage unit is a relatively easy job. However, retrieving the items that you need in the weeks and months to come can be an entirely different story if you have not taken steps to ensure these items can be easily found and removed from your unit. Thankfully, it is possible to avoid this type of issue by taking just a few minutes to implement one or both of the tips below when packing your self storage unit.

Be Sure To Leave Aisles Between Stored Boxes

Perhaps the biggest mistake that people make when packing their self storage units is that they do not leave any way to freely move about the unit once it is packed. Consequently, if they find themselves in need of an item that is stored in the back of the unit, the only way they will have to access this item is to first remove all of the items that they have stored in front of it. This process can make the rather simple task of removing one item from storage into a task that is both time consuming and physically exhausting.

Leaving aisles or walkways in between rows of stored boxes or furniture will ensure that you can easily move about your storage unit even after it is packed. Not only will this make it easier to find the items you need, it will also help you to remove these items easily once they are located.

Create A Map

If someone was to ask you exactly where you put your holiday decorations directly after packing your storage unit, you would likely be able to provide them with at least the general location of the boxes containing these items. However, if you were asked this same question six months down the line when it was time to remove these items from storage, your memory may not be quite so good. This is why it is always a good idea to create a map that will give you the location of the items inside your storage unit.

When creating a map of your storage unit, you will want to use large items as landmarks. This will allow you to quickly narrow down the area you are looking in when retrieving a specific item. For instance, if you have a large television in the back of the unit, marking this item on the map will give you a point of reference when looking for smaller items.

Once your landmarks have been placed on the map, you will then be able to add in smaller groups of items. For example, if your holiday decorations are located in the left rear of the unit, you could mark this area with the word "holiday" or simply with a symbol that represents this category of items.

Finally, hang a copy of your map on the wall inside your storage unit. This will allow you to quickly reference the map and locate the items you need each time you come to retrieve a specific item. If you're looking for a self-storage facility in your area, visit Epic Group Inc.
