Preparing, Packing And Storing Your Model Airplanes

by Erin Mitchell

Collecting model airplanes has long been a hobby enjoyed by many; but, what do you do when your collection exceeds the limits of your home? Well, you sure don't want to part with them. Fortunately, you have the perfect option of removing some of your model airplanes and placing them in a self-storage facility near you. Here, you will learn how to properly store your model airplanes to preserve them all in perfect condition.

Create a Digital Inventory

Take photos of all of your model airplanes. Once you have the photos, create a digital inventory of them including the name of the plane, the date that you built it, and if you choose, any stories you have about the project.

Give each plane a number so that you can easily keep track of the planes that you will be storing.

Clean the Model Airplanes

Before you pack your model airplanes for storage, they must be thoroughly cleaned. If you do not clean them, they will not look very nice when you reclaim them from storage.

When cleaning your model airplanes, it is best to use a low-suction vacuum with a small brush attachment; however, do not touch the small, intricate parts of the planes, as it could cause damage that is difficult to repair.

Never use any chemicals to clean the model airplanes. Instead, use a very lightly dampened cloth to wipe away any dirt that will not come off with the vacuum. If you use chemicals, the paint and decals could become damaged.

Pack the Model Airplanes

If you have model airplanes that are easily disassembled, consider doing so before packing them up. Disassembled planes require less space and can more easily be safely stored.

Purchase several acid-free boxes and tissue paper to pack your planes. Try to find boxes that are the appropriate size to pack the planes without stacking them on top of each other. Long boxes that are not deep are likely the best option as they won't take up as much room in storage and you can safely store the planes inside without stacking them.

Place the plane inside the box and use the acid-free tissue paper to secure it in place. Crumple up the tissue paper and tuck it under the wings and underside of the plane. Use as much tissue paper as necessary to keep the plane from jostling around.

Toss a silica gel packet in the box before you seal it up to absorb any moisture that it may be exposed to. Tape up the box and label it with the number of the plane that is inside of it.

Select the Storage Unit

Once you have packed up the planes you will be putting in storage, it is time to find the storage unit for the collection. Opt for a storage facility that is climate-controlled so that the planes are not exposed to extreme temperatures and humidity.

Use a shelving unit or wooden pallets on the floor to put the boxes on. Never put the boxes on a concrete floor because it could absorb the moisture from the floor into the box and damage the contents.

Preparing, packing and storing your model airplanes in this way will help to preserve them while being stored in a facility, such as Foothills Storage.
